Tattoos Linked to Hard-to-Treat Bacterial Infection

"Tap water was used to dilute tattoo ink, and may have been the source of the bacteria, the CDC said. While using tap water is not against standards (nurses are permitted to wash surface  wounds with tap water. Researchers recommended tattoo artists use distilled or sterile water at all times."

NYC Using tap water to mix in ink was blamed for  2 infections from one shop caused by mixing ink with tap water, a mycobacterium. NYC notified  tattooists to only use Sterile Water, which was later later amended by interpretation so as not disallowing other safe and effective diluents.
