Many years ago silver jewelry was plentiful, but since
the old cash crop is being replaced by coffee, there seems
to be no money around for the people to buy silver and
continue their long tradition in jewelry-making.

There is hardly anything to be found these days because traders have swept through and bought everything they could get and
literally left nothing. Even having lived here for years and
speaking the language it was a long and difficult journey. It's not like
calling a cab or boarding Amtrak to reach remote places.
These authentic pieces took months to get, piece at a
time, by traveling to the most remote hill tribes and areas. As you can see
by the map, it's a long way from Bangkok, so when Wes asked for a favor I
knew this was going to be a big undertaking, but it was great, and the
collection can't be rivaled. With the exception of the two dozen
bent arrow earrings that I was able to get, the rest are really rare and
belong in a museum or sold to collectors who can appreciate what these
pieces are and represent. These are just not made any more.
Western-type culture is also beginning to take hold and soon there
won't be a real tribe culture at all. Large size traditional piercings are
loosing ground fast so the big jewelry is truly a treasure.
The jewelry Greg brought is being cataloged and photographed and is being
added as completed.
